Taxes

Limited Liability Companies (referred to as DOO in Serbia) do not have the option of a flat tax rate, unlike sole proprietors who may choose this route. Sole proprietors with an annual turnover of less than six million dinars (approximately $54,000) have the possibility of being subject to a fixed tax rate. However, flat-rate businesses are not eligible to participate in the VAT system.

Flat-rate business proprietors are exempt from paying profit tax, as they are not required to maintain accounting records or calculate profits. They can alternatively opt for double-entry bookkeeping to manage their financial records.

Both sole proprietors and LLCs may either register or not register for VAT. For instance, if an LLC or sole proprietor earned more than 8 million dinars (around $72,000) in the previous year, they are obligated to register with the VAT system. Otherwise, registration is optional.

The standard VAT rate is 20%, while a reduced VAT rate of 10% is applicable. LLCs are subject to a 15% tax rate, whereas sole proprietors are taxed at a rate of 10%. In the case of non-resident owners from countries without a double taxation agreement with Serbia, the dividend tax stands at 20%.

The calculation of the dividend tax follows the terms of the agreement when the owner hails from a nation with which Serbia has a double taxation avoidance agreement. If a foreign entity holds ownership of a Serbian corporation, the dividend tax rate is 25%. For Serbian residents, the dividend tax rate is 15%.

Regarding sole proprietors, if their income from various sources like wages, entrepreneurship, property rentals, etc., exceeds 23,000 EUR in the preceding calendar year, they are liable to pay a 10% personal income tax. Any income surpassing 46,000 EUR is subject to an additional 15% tax.

While the digital nomad visa is currently under development in Serbia, you can already explore the country, establish a business, or stay for up to three months without incurring tax obligations. Your experience in this charming country is entirely at your discretion.

Who is it for?

Serbia's authorities have set a monthly income threshold of approximately $3,500 as the primary criterion for obtaining a digital nomad visa in Serbia. This requirement is applicable to applicants from any country, allowing individuals who meet this income threshold to apply. Additionally, your family members or spouse can apply for the visa under the same income requirements.

What are the steps?

Work permits in Serbia are issued by the Serbian National Employment Service. If you're self-employed, you must apply for a Serbian work visa, as freelancers fall under the self-employed category.

This work permit enables foreign individuals who have registered a business with the Serbian Business Register Agency to conduct business activities in Serbia. The self-employment work permit is valid for the same duration as a long-term D visa or a temporary residence permit, which is up to one year, with the option for extensions.

The process of obtaining a self-employment work permit is straightforward. You'll need to submit the required documents and answer a few additional questions. It's possible to apply for a permit or an extension of a work permit either through email or in person.

Timeline for approval

The processing time for Serbia's digital nomad visa typically takes a minimum of 30 days. It is advisable to initiate your visa application at least three months before your intended travel date. The visa processing duration is a minimum of 30 days. Please ensure that your travel document or passport remains valid for a minimum of 90 days from your departure date from Serbia.

The visa issuance deadline falls within 15 days after you have submitted your complete application. However, there is a provision to request an extension of up to 30 days if there are valid reasons to do so. Additionally, once you obtain a long-term D visa, you will receive a sticker that should be affixed to the first available page of your passport.
