On October 27, 1847, during the Mexican-American War, General Zachary Taylor's troops clashed with Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of Buena Vista in Coahuila, Mexico. The battle was a decisive victory for the Americans, who captured over 1,000 Mexican soldiers and killed or wounded many more. The outcome boosted American morale and paved the way for the subsequent capture of Mexico City. Little did Taylor know that his own death would soon follow, making him the only US President to have died while still in office – and also giving his opponent, Lewis Cass, a chance to take over and claim the presidency.
